Improving Tomato Performance in High pH Soils
Healthy soil is the fundamental requirement for vigorous and optimal plant growth. Improving physical soil structure, root zone aeration, and organic matter content creates an environment where crops can perform to their full potential. Protecting long term soil quality is not just about boosting this season's yield, it is about maintaining productive land year after year. This case shows how a soil conditioner performed on alkaline soils in a Valencia tomato trial.
The problem in alkaline and saline soils
On alkaline soils with a high pH around 8.0, key nutrients like phosphorus and essential trace elements quickly bind to soil minerals, leaving less within reach of the roots. On saline soils, high sodium levels and bicarbonates in irrigation water add to this: they degrade soil structure and stress young roots.
The Valencia field trial
To test a practical solution to these root zone bottlenecks, GEP accredited research firm GMW Bioscience S.L. ran an independent side by side trial in Alberic, Valencia (Spain) in 2019. The trial evaluated Black Magic, a soil conditioner from the SOIL+ range within GROGREEN's Biotics line, developed for alkaline and saline soils. It combines nitrogen, calcium, humic acids, lignosulfonates, and plant derived extracts. Its gel formulation and low pH keep the product concentrated around the drip emitters, where it lowers the local pH and releases bound nutrients. The trial itself ran on an alkaline loam at pH 8.0.
Trial setup at a glance
The trial followed standard randomized block protocols with four replicates. Treated and untreated plots were grown side by side under identical real world conditions.
Measured field results
In each of the four replicate blocks, Black Magic treated plots were compared with untreated plots. Root weight, plant height and flower count were measured during the season, and all three differences were statistically confirmed. Marketable yield was recorded at harvest on 28 October, as an indicative result.
Black Magic works from the root up, and the effect carries through the whole plant. The photos below show it in practice: roots from the same type of trial in a greenhouse, which gave similar results, and the trial field in Alberic, Valencia, with the Black Magic treated rows on the right and the untreated rows on the left.

How Black Magic works in the root zone
Black Magic is a specialized soil conditioner from the SOIL+ range within GROGREEN Biotics, made for alkaline and saline soils. Applied through the drip line, it improves the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil directly around the root zone.
In high pH soils, calcium reduces bicarbonate pressure to restore root balance, while in saline soils, the same calcium pushes harmful sodium away so it washes out with irrigation water.
Lowering local pH at the dripper frees up phosphorus and key trace elements that were locked in the soil.
Natural humic acids act as a protective guard, preventing free nutrients from locking up in the soil again.
Gives crops an immediate boost of easily absorbed calcium and nitrogen right at the active root interface.
Creating a healthier root environment directly leads to bigger roots, proven by a 40% higher root weight in the Valencia tomato trial.
Humic acids and sugars improve aeration, water movement around the dripper, and feed beneficial micro-life.
Tips for applying Black Magic
Available in 1 L bottle, 5 L drum, 10 L drum.

More flowers put more fruit on the plant, and that puts extra demands on fruit development and firmness. In the trial, the share of fruit that made grade stayed level with the untreated plots, so fruit quality deserves its own attention from fruit set onwards. Black Magic works in the root zone early in the season, while Ca-B-Sul applied during fruit set supports firm fruit that reaches top market standards.
Ca-B-Sul is one of our correctors. Other GROGREEN correctors also pair well with Black Magic. Look at what your crop needs and add the right corrector to support optimal growth. See all correctors

FAQ
Why are nutrients harder to reach on alkaline soils?
On alkaline soils around pH 8.0, phosphorus and essential trace elements quickly bind to soil minerals, so roots can reach less of what is applied. High sodium levels and bicarbonates in irrigation water add to this by degrading soil structure and stressing young roots. Working on the root zone itself helps keep nutrients within reach of the crop.
How does a soil conditioner work in alkaline soils?
Black Magic, a soil conditioner from the SOIL+ range, is applied through the drip line. Its gel formulation and low pH keep the product concentrated around the emitters, where it lowers the local pH, dissolves bicarbonates and releases bound phosphorus and trace minerals. Soluble calcium displaces sodium, while humic acids and lignosulfonates keep nutrients available.
What results did Black Magic deliver on tomatoes in alkaline soil?
In an independent trial by GMW Bioscience S.L. in Alberic, Valencia, on alkaline loam at pH 8.0 in 2019, Black Magic treated tomatoes produced 40% more root weight, 36% taller plants and 90% more flowers per plant than untreated plots, all statistically confirmed. Marketable yield was 53% higher at harvest (51.0 vs 33.3 t/ha), an indicative result.
