The apple (Malus domestica) is one of the most iconic and widely cultivated fruit crops in the world, cherished for its versatility, storage potential, and nutritional profile. Originating from the mountains of Central Asia, this member of the rose family has been bred into thousands of distinct varieties.
Beyond its cultural status, the apple is a reliable perennial that is a major part of farming in cooler regions. Whether the fruit is for eating fresh, cooking, or making cider, a good crop depends on picking the right variety for your specific environment. Understanding the tree’s basic needs—from its winter rest period to its soil preferences—is the first step in keeping an orchard productive for decades.

It is more resistant to cold than the pear tree and does not need so much heat and light for ripening. It suffers less with the cold than with the heat and prefers humid to dry climates. The flowers are sensitive to late spring frosts, the use of anti-freeze irrigation or other protection systems are common in areas with high risk. The apple tree tolerates temperatures lower than -10°C, without affecting the tree bark, although when descending below -15°C some floral buds may be lost.

The ideal soil is well-draining, fertile loam that allows roots to spread without becoming waterlogged. While they are somewhat adaptable, avoiding heavy clay or overly sandy soils is key to preventing root rot and ensuring consistent nutrient uptake.

For optimal nutrient availability, aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If the soil becomes too alkaline, the tree may struggle with “iron chlorosis,” a condition where the leaves turn yellow because the tree cannot absorb essential minerals.
