Aubergine or Eggplant is a high-yielding, warm-season vegetable crop in the Solanaceae family, widely cultivated for its diverse fruit types. Originally from tropical Asia, it has been developed into many agricultural varieties ranging from small, round cultivars to large, elongated types. For a successful harvest, the primary focus must be on maintaining high thermal units and nutrient-rich soil throughout the growing season.

As a tender perennial often grown as a specialized annual, the eggplant requires a long, frost-free period to reach maturity. It is highly sensitive to cold, making environmental management the most critical factor for a high-quality yield. Establishing the correct balance of heat and soil structure is the first step in ensuring a productive crop.

It is a crop of warm and dry climates, so it is considered one of the most demanding in heat (more than tomatoes and peppers). It supports well the high temperatures, when humidity is adequate, tolerating up to 40-45ºC. They require consistent daytime temperatures between 21°C and 30°C to thrive and set fruit. Because they have very little tolerance for cold and stop growing if temperatures drop below 15°C, they are highly preferred for greenhouse cultivation in temperate regions.

These plants perform best with a relative humidity between 60% and 70%, which supports consistent fruit development and prevents blossom drop. If humidity falls below 50%, pollination can fail and spider mites become a risk, while levels exceeding 80% in stagnant air can cause blossoms to rot and increase fungal pressure.

The ideal soil is a rich, fertile, and well-draining sandy loam that can accommodate the plant’s powerful and deep root system. Eggplants are “heavy feeders” that require a steady supply of nutrients, so incorporating plenty of organic matter is essential for supporting their fast growth and heavy fruit.

For optimal growth, maintain a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5. roper pH management is necessary to ensure the plant remains healthy and productive throughout its life cycle.
